Wake windows are the stretches of time your baby is awake between sleeps. They are not strict rules, but they can help you notice when a baby is drifting from under-tired to overtired.

Use this as a starting point, not a diagnosis.

If your baby was premature, has feeding concerns, or your pediatrician has given specific sleep guidance, follow that professional advice first.

What Wake Windows Mean

A wake window usually starts when baby wakes and ends when baby falls asleep. Feeding, diaper changes, tummy time, stroller walks, and quiet cuddles all count as awake time.

Wake Window Chart by Age

AgeTypical wake windowWhat to watch
0-4 weeks35-60 minutesVery short alert periods and quick sleepy cues
1-2 months45-75 minutesFussiness, staring away, red eyebrows
3-4 months75-120 minutesLonger play periods, but naps can still be short
5-6 months2-3 hoursMore predictable nap rhythm
7-12 months2.5-4 hoursUsually fewer naps and longer awake stretches

Sleepy Cues to Watch

  • Looking away or zoning out
  • Rubbing eyes or pulling ears
  • Red eyebrows or a glazed expression
  • Sudden fussiness after a calm period
  • Yawning, hiccups, or frantic feeding cues

Sample Daily Rhythm

  1. Baby wakes and feeds.
  2. Keep the first awake stretch quiet and short.
  3. Watch for sleepy cues before the window maxes out.
  4. Write down when baby falls asleep and how long the nap lasts.
  5. Look for patterns over several days instead of judging one rough nap.

When to Adjust

If baby takes a long time to fall asleep, the wake window may be too short. If baby melts down quickly or wakes after a few minutes, the window may be too long. Make tiny changes and track what happens.

Printable Sleep Tracker

A paper tracker works well here because sleep patterns are easier to spot when they are visible across the whole day.
